Cathrin Hoffmann is a German-Iranian artist who lives and works in Berlin.
In her artistic practice across painting, sculpture, and installation, she investigates what it means to be human in the Technocene, an era defined by rapid technological acceleration, digital immersion, and deep planetary crisis. She examines a world where physical intimacy is redirected toward cold screens, AI reshapes human cognition, and the boundary between the organic self and synthetic existence permanently collapses. Her work confronts the resulting crisis of humanism: the profound alienation and anxiety born from surrendering real-life awareness to digital networks and relentless speed. At the core of her research are two urgent questions: What becomes of humanity if we replace the physical body with a digital existence? And how can we reclaim a conscious awareness of life to rebuild a sustainable relationship with ourselves and the world?
Through a distinctive portrayal of the human form that is simultaneously mechanical, fluid, and grotesquely distorted, she reexamines the legacy of the modern era, recontextualizing its technological fascination and social detachment through pressing 21st-century perspectives. Materiality plays a central role in this investigation. The tangible resistance of paint, rough textures, and sculptural form stands in stark opposition to the frictionless logic of digital imagery. Rather than idealizing the body, Hoffmann treats it as a vulnerable, porous, and resistant structure through which the transformations of human experience become visible. By dissolving the boundaries between classical painting and sculpture, she bridges the dualism of virtuality and reality. Smooth, software-derived gradients coexist with dynamic brushstrokes and unconventional materials, creating immersive spaces where intimacy, alienation, and physical presence continually reassert themselves.
